Koen Arts is a PhD student registered with the University of Aberdeen, working within the Socio-Economic Research Group under the theme of values, choices and behaviours. His PhD focuses on the concept of wilderness and on the social aspects of ecological restoration and reintroduction.

Current research interests 

Koen has completed a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Forest and Nature Conservation at Wageningen University and a B.A. and M.A. in Philosophy at Radboud University Nijmegen. His scientific interests include the intrinsic value of nature, attitudes towards nature conservation, exotic species, and philosophy and theory of nature conservation.

Koen is supervised at the Macaulay by Anke Fischer and at the University of Aberdeen by Rene van der Wal

The James Hutton Research Institute is the result of the merger in April 2011 of MLURI and SCRI. This merger formed a new powerhouse for research into food, land use, and climate change.
