With a background in the handling of digital map and satellite data, has extensive experience in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and image analysis software (e.g. ESRI and ERDAS products) with which analysis of spatial data for urban and rural landscapes is undertaken. Has been responsible for the analysis of aerial imagery (e.g. deriving orthophotographs) for public institutions (e.g. the Scottish Environmental protection Agency).

Was part of the team working on European Commission study into urban greenspaces (i.e. Greenspace), implementing a Decision Support Tool on access and inventory of greenspaces Has undertaken GIS analysis for government departments (e.g. runoff maps for the Scottish Executive), agencies (e.g. Countryside Council for Wales), local authorities (e.g. a wind energy Decision Support Tool for Aberdeenshire Council), government agencies (e.g. indicators of landscape change for Scottish Natural Heritage), and private companies (e.g. visual impact assessments for windfarm developments).

A member of the Virtual Landscapes Team, responsible for navigating stakeholders through models of the landscape and explaining the nature of changes being presented. Has been responsible for running the Virtual Landscape Theatre at exhibitions (e.g. All Energy, 2006).

Current research interests 

Stakeholder and public evaluation (WP3.8.6); involvement in various Institute commercial contracts.

The James Hutton Research Institute is the result of the merger in April 2011 of MLURI and SCRI. This merger formed a new powerhouse for research into food, land use, and climate change.
