ELPEG - Ecosystems and Land Use Policy Engagement Group

As part of our vision for integration, the Biodiversity and Ecosystems work package (WP 1.3) and the Integrated and Sustainable Management of Natural Assets work package (WP 1.4) of the Scottish Government Strategic Research Programme organise regular meetings of the jointly-run Ecosystems and Land Use Policy Engagement Group (ELPEG). This group includes stakeholders from Scottish Government and key government agencies including SEPA, SNH, and the Forestry Commission. It is chaired by RESAS Science Advisors who help coordinate science-policy interaction. ELPEG meetings provide a chance for scientists and policy stakeholders to exchange information about ongoing research, as well as helping to keep researchers up-to-speed on policy developments so that the research can deliver useful outputs to policy makers in a timely way.

As well as organising ELPEG meetings we produce the ELPEG Bulletin. This provides updates for policy stakeholders on research activities undertaken in the Strategic Research Programme, in particular in the areas of Biodiversity and Ecosystems, and Integrated Management of Natural Assets. The focus is the policy areas of:

Scottish Biodiversity Strategy; Land Use Strategy for Scotland; Climate Change Plan and Climate Change Adaptation Programme; Scottish Rural Development Programme and Common Agricultural Policy greening; Scottish Forestry Strategy.

The ELPEG bulletins provide an update of our research corralled under the relevant policy areas:

We also hold an annual Ecosystems and Land Use Stakeholders Engagement Group meeting. This includes a much wider group of stakeholders than ELPEG, including representatives from business and environmental organisations. The reports and presentations from all ELSEG meeting are available:

  • Ecosystems and Land Use Stakeholders Engagement Group workshop report, November 2016
  • Ecosystems and Land Use Stakeholders Engagement Group pre meeting briefing, November 2017
  • Ecosystems and Land Use Stakeholders Engagement Group workshop report, November 2017
  • Ecosystems and Land Use Stakeholders Engagement Group workshop report, January 2019
