Please see the text below for more a more detailed description of the journey. The walking sections, (Sections One and Three) have more detailed maps.

Section One

Section One map

Walk from Woolmanhill Flats, (John Street) (1) towards the Denburn roundabout (2), and then on to the end of Blackfriars Street (3). There, cross to the other side of the street, (4) (overlooking Union Terrace Gardens) and turn right. Follow the pavement onto Union Terrace, (5), and keep walking until you reach Union Street traffic lights/crossroads and statue of Edward VII, (6). Cross to the diagonally opposite side of the crossroads, (7), (towards Sally shop and Santander branch). Walk uphill to Music Hall SW bus stop (Outside Game, stop ID Music Hall C4), (8), which shows the No. 15.

Get on the next No. 15 bus to come along. Ask for The James Hutton Institute at Airyhall. (The bus may have ‘Craigiebuckler’ as its destination.) Please be aware the stops on route aren’t announced by the driver or displayed as you reach them. The journey should take about 15 minutes. (Once you cross a second roundabout, this one intersecting with a dual carriageway, (9), you will be almost there). Get off the bus after it passes the Palm Court Hotel, (10). (You’ll see it on the on the left-hand side of the bus; see photo, right.) The bus stop (Viewfield Crescent stop), (11) is just opposite shops.

Walk towards the traffic lights at the crossroads, (12). Cross over to the opposite side of the road, (the library side), (13), and keep walking past the entrance to the school until you reach a traffic island. Use the traffic island, (14), to cross the road, then carrying on for a short distance in the same direction as before the crossing, turn right into Macaulay Drive, (15). (You will see a sign for the James Hutton Institute and Bright Horizons Nursery.) Follow the road down, walking past the main driveway, (16), (cars only), and follow the sign 50m further for a safer and more pleasant entry across the road, (17), into our beautiful grounds. Follow the paths and signs for reception, (18). At reception press the buzzer to be given entry. Please note, the path within the grounds comprises steps and/or a steep slope depending upon the path taken. If these are likely to cause difficulty please let us know in advance.

The James Hutton Research Institute is the result of the merger in April 2011 of MLURI and SCRI. This merger formed a new powerhouse for research into food, land use, and climate change.
