Doors Open Day at the James Hutton Institute, Aberdeen

Our Craigiebuckler site will be participating in Doors Open Day on Saturday 10th September, 10am to 4pm. Join us to learn more about our research on soil, land use and the environment. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the main building and beautiful grounds and take part in exciting science-based activities for all the family, including the following:

  • In the Lab
    • Scanning Electron Microscope
    • Mass Spectrometer
  • Outside
    • Fungal Foray
  • Activities
    • Pond dipping (indoors)
    • Barley and Me (TouchTable)
    • Microscopes with soil invertebrates
    • Contribute to our science by sharing your views (TouchTable and other activities)
    • See the library and learn about the building’s history
    • Experience our Virtual Landscape Theatre

In short, free fun activities for all ages with plenty of on-site parking. No catering facilities will be available but feel free to bring your own food.

Doors Open Days is Scotland’s largest free annual architectural event. It is coordinated nationally by the Scottish Civic Trust and is part of European Heritage Days alongside Scottish Archaeology Month, coordinated by Archaeology Scotland (formerly known as the Council for Scottish Archaeology). Both are supported by Historic Environment Scotland.

The James Hutton Research Institute is the result of the merger in April 2011 of MLURI and SCRI. This merger formed a new powerhouse for research into food, land use, and climate change.
