Come and spend a fun family day on the farm!

The Institute will be taking part in Open Farm Sunday 2015 on 7 June.

LEAF - Linking Environment And FarmingCome along and see what we do here on our very special and rather unusual farm at Mylnefield. As well as being a farm it’s an open-air laboratory for our scientists to do all sorts of crop trials, experimental farming techniques and projects to see how farming and the environment can work better together.

There will be tractor trailer tours, activities and experiments to see and help out with for kids and adults alike, farm machinery that you can have a close look at, self-guided walks and trails to follow, you can plant up a seedling to take home, and meet some cute lambs. Bring a picnic or grab something from the hot food catering stand. Many exhibits will be under cover so don’t worry if it’s a wet day.

Here are just some of the exciting activities we've got planned for you!

Soil Biota - the good, the bad and the ugly!
Soils are home to over one fourth of all living species on earth and just one teaspoon of garden soil may contain millions of individuals. Play the game and identify the good, the bad and the ugly and you can even make your own creatures to take home!

Barley and Me
Have you got what it takes to be a barley farmer in the future? Using today’s gaming technology, take on the role of the farmer and see how successful you can be! Choose your soil, choose your methods but watch out for flooding, pests and diseases!

The Adventures of an Arable Weed Seed
Learn about the trials and tribulations of life as a seed in the soil of an arable field. Can your seed survive being crushed by the Terrible Tractor, avoid being eaten by the Giant Beetle or withstand the force of wind and water?

Colour Crazy Chemistry!
Grab your gloves and labcoat and prepare to get messy! All plants have different levels of pH and need different types of soil to grow up healthy. Match the plants with the soil and make your own pH indicator from red cabbage to test your own soil at home.

Grain from Plant to Plate
Cereals are an important food crop and many of us eat cereal grains every day from breakfast cereal to the bread in our sandwiches. Learn about the different varieties of cereal grains, use the Quern stone to mill flour and use salt-dough as an alternative to modelling clay.

Take a Farm Tour on a Tractor and Bogey
Always a firm favourite with kids and adults alike, this is the best way of taking a tour of Mylnefield Farm. Find about our hedgerows, why the edges of fields are so important and what lives in places like this, about how we look after our wildlife and what field experiments we conduct.
