Professor Louise Heathwaite will deliver the James Hutton Institute Distinguished Women Scientists Seminar as part of the Women in Science Festival 2013. The seminar entitled "Towards a sustainable use of natural resources" will take place at the James Hutton Institute in Aberdeen and be simultaneously broadcast to the Dundee site.

Professor Heathwaite’s research expertise is in land and water systems science and cuts across environmental sciences to interface with social science and economics.

She is Professor of Land and Water Science and Co-Director of the Centre for Sustainable Water Management in the Lancaster Environment Centre, Lancaster University and recently was appointed as Chief Scientific Adviser for Rural Affairs and Environment for the Scottish Government.

Professor Heathwaite has worked as science champion for the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) as Theme Leader for the Sustainable Use of Natural Resources. In her seminar she will outline the complex challenges in achieving sustainable use of natural resources which we face.

This seminar was originally scheduled to take place in March.

The James Hutton Research Institute is the result of the merger in April 2011 of MLURI and SCRI. This merger formed a new powerhouse for research into food, land use, and climate change.
