Royal Highland Show Environmental Challenge Survey

Congratulations to the winners of the free prize draw who cast their vote choosing their most important environmental challenge facing Scotland today.

The winners are:

Daye Tucker, Glasgow

Anna Swanson, Caithness

Benjamin Yule, Arbroath

Mary Inglis, Stirling

Visitors to the Royal Highland Show 2011, held at the Ingliston Showground from 23 – 26 June, were invited to tell us what they thought was the biggest environmental challenge facing Scotland today.

Within Scotland, there is a growing demand to provide food, energy and clean water from our finite land and natural resources and well as protect biodiversity and adapt to and mitigate against climate change.

These demands are complex, interconnected and ever changing but research carried out at The James Hutton Institute aims to improve understanding of the interrelationships between changes in climate, land use, natural resources, and human communities.

Nearly 400 visitors cast their vote over the four days of the show with the results of the poll presented in the graph below.

Thank you to everyone who took part in our survey, or came to visit us in the SAC marquee, the SEARS / Natural Scotland tent or the Dobbies Children’s Education Tent. If you have any further queries about The James Hutton Institute or our research, please e-mail us.

The James Hutton Research Institute is the result of the merger in April 2011 of MLURI and SCRI. This merger formed a new powerhouse for research into food, land use, and climate change.
