"The new V&A Dundee is a magnificent building, and the fact that it has been inspired by Scotland’s landscape directly connects it with the work of our scientists"

The transformational power of the first-ever dedicated design museum in Scotland and the only other V&A museum anywhere in the world outside London was beyond doubt, even before it opened. The James Hutton Institute would like to commend and congratulate all those whose vision and endeavours have dreamed and now delivered the new Victoria & Albert Museum in Dundee.

Professor Colin Campbell, Chief Executive of the James Hutton Institute, said: “The new V&A Dundee is a magnificent building, and the fact that it has been inspired by Scotland’s landscape directly connects it with the work of our scientists.

“The Institute is proud to support Scotland’s only museum dedicated to design in all forms and contexts: artistic, aesthetic and functional, but also technical and scientific.

“Our work includes the design of sustainable food and environmental systems, to ensure there is enough food, water and energy for everyone on this planet, without that costing the Earth. That is another clear connection.

“We are very much in step with the exciting developments happening in the city of Dundee and are beneficiaries of the positive outlook and associations these have brought to the area.”

With development projects at neighbouring Invergowrie, including Scotland’s first vertical growth facility and the forthcoming International Barley Hub, which is part of the Tay Cities Deal bid to government, these are exciting times for Dundee and for the Institute.

The James Hutton Institute is a corporate supporter of the V&A Dundee Museum. The £80m museum, designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, is at the centre of a £1bn transformation initiative aiming to reconnect Dundee with its riverside, and it is fuelling considerable redevelopment and economic benefit in the city.

The James Hutton Research Institute is the result of the merger in April 2011 of MLURI and SCRI. This merger formed a new powerhouse for research into food, land use, and climate change.
