Research and innovation underpinning Scotland’s road to net-zero: come and see it at the #RHS200

The Royal Highland Show (23-26 June 2022, Ingliston, Edinburgh EH28 8NB) is one of Scotland's most iconic events, and while it showcases the very best of farming food and rural life, it could be argued that it is actually a science, research and innovation event, since these disciplines underpin the future of agriculture in Scotland.

The James Hutton Institute’s world-leading contributions to the science of crops, land and the environment will be presented at the Show through exhibits covering the themes of land use, agritech and biodiversity, with a focus on net-zero in agriculture.

Hutton scientists will be on hand to describe how science is helping develop extraordinary innovation and new understanding to respond to Scotland’s ambitious net-zero targets – for instance, how vertical farming can help reduce water wastage, agrochemical use and food miles.

Agritech exhibits will include a model of a greenhouse gas monitoring tower, a mini vertical farm model, virtual reality headsets and state-of-the-art controlled environment growing cubes, all focused on the demonstration and practical application of science.

For the first time, the Hutton marquee will feature a screening room, which will feature videos about the research being showcased. Alongside this, the Institute’s Virtual Landscape Theatre will allow visitors to immerse themselves in computer models of their environment to explore landscapes of the past, present and future.

On Show Thursday (23^rd June), the Institute will host its traditional James Hutton Reception, which will offer an opportunity to discuss Hutton research and innovation with policymakers.

Show Friday (24^th June) will see the re-launch of the Institute’s Best Soil in Show award, which draws attention to the need for active management of soils.
