High Commissioner of Namibia visits the James Hutton Institute in Dundee

HE Linda Scott (r) during her visit to the Institute
"It was a great opportunity for HE Linda Scott to gain insight into the work both James Hutton Limited and the James Hutton Institute carry out in Africa"

The James Hutton Institute was delighted to welcome Her Excellency Ms Linda Scott, High Commissioner of Namibia to the UK. The visit to the Hutton Dundee site, set up through James Hutton Limited’s membership of the Scottish Africa Business Association (SABA), was an opportunity for HE Linda Scott to gain insight into the work both James Hutton Limited and the James Hutton Institute carry out in Africa.

During her visit, HE Linda Scott was given several talks but both James Hutton Limited staff and institute staff. Topics of discussion included the Institute's potato breeding programme as well as water management and drought tolerance in crops.

Jonathan Snape, Head of James Hutton Limited, commented: “This is a great opportunity for HE Linda Scott to discover the work we do on agriculture, particularly in potatoes and importantly water management. Namibia is 3.4 times the size of the UK and is the driest country in sub-Saharan Africa with a large dependency on ground water.

"Agriculture accounts for around 5.4% of GDP but it has not reached its full potential. With this in mind, I look forward to discussing these issues and more with HE Linda Scott and looking at what potential there might be for collaboration in the future.”
