New appointment to James Hutton Institute Board of Directors

Mr Graeme Dickson has been appointed to the Hutton Board of Directors
"Graeme brings new and strategically-important insights, skills and knowledge to the Board that will contribute to keeping Hutton developing, responsive and doing relevant science"

The James Hutton Institute today announced the appointment of Mr Graeme Dickson, former senior civil servant and energy specialist, to its Board of Directors as a non-executive director.

Mr Dickson’s appointment is part of the normal process of rolling Board renewal.

Mr Dickson trained as a geologist and worked in the oil industry as a geophysicist prior to joining the civil service, holding positions in the Treasury and leading many departments in the Scottish Government. He was Director General, Enterprise, Environment and Innovation until 2016.

Currently a member of the Court of Heriot Watt University, a Trustee of Keep Scotland Beautiful and a Director of Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop, Mr Dickson has exceptionally wide experience across policy and business matters. He recently completed MSc in Carbon Management, undertaken to channel his strong interest in Scotland’s future decarbonisation and the transition to a low-, and zero-, carbon economy and society.

Following the announcement of this appointment, Professor Colin Campbell, Chief Executive of the Institute, commented: “Graeme brings new and strategically-important insights, skills and knowledge to the Board that will contribute to keeping Hutton developing, responsive and doing relevant science. It’s a pleasure to welcome him aboard.

“Board members’ expertise, skills and know-how shape the strategy of the organisation and help it anticipate and respond to challenges. Their input has helped the Institute return economic impact worth £12.75 for every pound of funding it receives.”

A further three Board appointments will be made over the next year to meet succession and turnover of current board members who can serve for a maximum of two three-year appointments. These will be the result of public advertisement and a recruitment and selection process open to all.
