Online conference to highlight benefits of intercropping for sustainability

"An event for researchers, farmers and the agriculture industry to hear the latest research and practical applications of intercropping"

The potential of innovative mixed-species crop systems to increase the sustainability of food production will be under the spotlight at an online conference focussing on the latest findings on intercropping research from lab to field.

Organised in collaboration with the Association of Applied Biology, the event will be held from the 18th to the 20th of January 2021, and will feature research from Horizon 2020-funded and James Hutton Institute-supported projects DIVERSify and ReMIX, alongside other projects. The aim is to highlight how researchers, farmers and other stakeholders are working together to design, test and provide practical solutions for multi-species intercropping.

The conference will include a panel session for farming practitioners with representatives from both research and industry to discuss uptake of intercropping and a film premiere to screen the final episode of the DIVERSify film series Growing Beyond Monoculture. Speakers from across Europe and further afield will cover topics ranging from basic research to practical application of intercrops, including:

• Nutrient and pest management
• Intercropping for yield benefits
• Environmental benefits and ecosystem services
• Innovations and Tools
• New approaches to investigate intercropping mechanisms
• Species, varieties and sowing arrangements
