"Sir Paul Grice brings new and strategically-important insights, skills and knowledge to the Board that will contribute towards keeping Hutton and its work focused on delivering the greatest impact."

The James Hutton Institute has announced the appointment of Sir Paul Grice, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Queen Margaret University, to its Board of Directors as a non-executive director.

Sir Paul held the position of Clerk and Chief Executive of the Scottish Parliament from its inception in 1999 to 2019, leading the delivery of all services to the Parliament alongside acting as its principal adviser on procedural and constitutional matters.

Having worked in governmental organisations both in London and Scotland, he has built a reputation as an outstanding leader. He was involved in the constitutional group with responsibility for the referendum on establishing the Scottish Parliament and he went on to manage the Scotland Act which laid the foundation for the new constitutional framework.

Sir Paul also has a deep understanding of the higher education sector and its challenges. He served as a member of the University Court of Stirling from 2006-2013 – chairing the University’s Finance and Resources Committee from 2008-2012 – and as a member of the Economic and Social Research Council from 2009-2015.

A Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Science, he is also a Policy Leader Fellow at the Centre for Science and Policy at the University of Cambridge and a Council Member of the Institute for Fiscal Studies. He is a champion of the importance of research, innovation and knowledge exchange.

Following the announcement of this appointment, Professor Colin Campbell, Chief Executive of the Institute, commented: “Sir Paul Grice brings new and strategically-important insights, skills and knowledge to the Board that will contribute towards keeping Hutton and its work focused on delivering the greatest impact. It’s great to have another proven leader join our Board.

“Board members’ inputs influence the strategy of the organisation and help it anticipate and respond to challenges. This has helped the Institute return economic impact worth £12.75 for every pound of funding it receives.”

Sir Paul commented: “I am delighted to be joining the Board of the James Hutton Institute and look forward to supporting them in their vital work to advance knowledge across disciplines and working with key partners throughout society.”
