Mr Xia Yin of the Polychrome conservation and technique research, Key Scientific Research Base of Ancient Polychrome Pot will give this Special IBES Seminar: 'Earthen Construction of Qin Terra Cotta Army and other Ancient Chinese earthen sites: an Introduction and their Conservation Problem' at the University of Aberdeen, Auris Lecture Theatre.
The Terracotta Army has been preserved for centuries, but environmental exposure is causing cracking of the earthen walls and various air-borne microbes have colonised the artefacts, causing further degradation. This talk will describe conservation problems associated with protecting one of the world’s most impressive archaeological finds from further deterioration. The group visiting seek insight and solutions from microbiologists, soil scientists, materials scientists and others to explore underlying processes and possible mitigation options.
The team are (1) Mr Xia Yin, Chemist, Polychrome conservation and technique research, Group Leader, (2) Mrs Yan Shumei, Microbiologist, Anti-fungi in Cultural Heritage, (3) Mrs Li Hua, Conservator, Environmental research in Museum (4) Mr Zhang Shangxin, Conservator, Scientific research in archaeology objects. They are free on 9-10 September, so please contact Paul Hallett [1] if you would like to meet them.
