The interaction between water and soil is one of the most fundamental in the global water cycle. Soils are key to the regulation of water flows across land and in the quality of water in our rivers and streams. At the James Hutton Institute, our research is aimed to improve our understanding of how soils release and retain water, carbon and nutrients in both space and time, from the root level where we are investigating how plant access water in the soil to maintain crop growth, yields and quality in particular during periods of water stress to the catchment scale where we are assessing management option to improve water quality through soil management.
