Dimitris was awarded a Bsc in Applied Mathematics and Physics from the National University of Technology in Athens (Greece) before completing his Msc in Applied Mathematical Sciences with Biological and Ecological Modelling at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland. During his studies, he learned a broad range of topics in the areas of mathematical modelling, mathematical ecology, mathematical biology and medicine, dynamical systems, applied linear algebra, numerical analysis, regression analysis, linear models and designs, computer science along with their applications in physics and engineering.
In late 2012 Dimitris joined the James Hutton Institute and University of Dundee to undertake a PhD in mathematical modelling of plant root systems funded by the European project EURoot [2].
My interest in mathematical modelling of branching structures of biophysical systems and their interactions with the environment stems largely from my research during my postgraduate studies in mathematical neuroscience and my work on models of molecular movement in neurons.
The project involves the development and application of novel mathematical and computational methods in modelling of plant root systems. Innovative mathematical techniques in numerical simulation, model parameterisation and model sensitivity analysis were used to calibrate the root growth density-based model on various genotypes in a range of reference environmental conditions. Results from this work aim to uncover key biological factors and plant traits that can be targeted by breeding.

I am also really interested in different approaches to teaching Mathematics.
