Bracken

Bracken dominated slope Areas dominated by bracken (Pteridium aquilinum) forming greater than 50% ground cover have been mapped primarily on upland farms or moorland fringes or steep slopes extending along valley sides. This feature can be difficult to interpret as the photograph tones vary throughout the year in accordance with the bracken growth phases. Bracken is most extensive within a warm or mild, moist climate with some element of shelter from frosts and strong winds, a relatively fertile soil and free drainage. The total number of plant species in a dense bracken stand is small and grazing value is highly restricted.
