Resting on bedrock within 30cms depth.

Characteristics of Rankers

  • Shallow rocks with solid or fragmented non-calcareous rocks within 30cm depth
  • Where rock occurs within 10cm of land surface, soils are re-classified as LITHOSOLS
  • Soils predominate in mountain or hilly terrain or on glacially eroded rocky terrain
  • Soil have an organic or organo-mineral surface horizon but generally lack a subsoil
  • Soils are generally very stony with angular stones widespread
  • Soils often present on steep terrain in association with outcropping rock
