Robin is a plant ecologist at the Institute focussing on the management and functioning of biodiversity in a range of Scottish ecosystems. He currently leads a deliverable, Biodiversity and Ecosystem Function, as part of the Scottish Government funded research programme on Natural Assets.

He is a Visiting Professor in the School of Biological Science at the University of Liverpool, a Chartered Ecologist and a member of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management. He is a Coordinating Editor of the Nordic Journal of Botany [2] and a Subject Editor for Oikos [3]. He is an author of over 180 refereed publications as well as numerous reports to government departments and statutory agencies.

Robin is the institute’s representative on the North East Scotland Biodiversity Partnership [4] and chairs its Management Group.

Current research interests

His current research covers the following areas:

  • The role of plant functional traits in ecosystem function,
  • Long-term vegetation change, especially related to Machair, sand dunes and grasslands https://www.hutton.ac.uk/research/birse-and-robertson-archive [5]
  • Upland management for biodiversity including the >Glen Finglas experiment [6]
  • The relationships between diet, parasites and performance in Soay sheep [7]>, and
  • Using biodiversity data as indicators for ecosystem health and conservation prioritisation. >

He also maintains an interest in previous areas of research including:

  • The role large mammals play as seed dispersal agents,
  • Bracken ecology and control,
  • The role of seedbanks in vegetation dynamics, and
  • The impact of management on vegetation dynamics.
