The latest cereal varieties and research will be on show at Saphock Farm in Aberdeenshire on Thursday 5th July for Cereals in Practice 2018, the annual cereals-themed event organised by the James Hutton Institute, Scotland's Rural College (SRUC) and the Scottish Society for Crop Research.
Aimed at farmers, agronomists, industry and scientists working with cereals, Cereals in Practice brings variety trials and current research together in one place providing a unique opportunity to discover and discuss the latest recommendations and developments in the cereals industry.
Dr Andy Evans, leader of the Applied Practice team at SRUC, said: “Crops have had to deal with a myriad of environmental conditions this season, with a difficult sowing period at the back end of 2017 followed by rain, snow and a prolonged dry spell in the spring.
“Despite these pressures, the winter cereal crops have shown themselves to be pretty resilient, which is a testimony to the robustness of the varieties that we grow up here in Scotland.
“However, spring barley and oats do look stressed and short this season due to the late sowing and dry weather this spring, which could lead to shorter straw than usual.”
Researchers from the James Hutton Institute, SRUC and consultants from SAC Consulting will be on hand to discuss cereal agronomy and how growers can respond to the challenges this and other seasons throw at them.
This year’s event will feature the following field trials and demonstrations:
Exhibits from the James Hutton Institute, SRUC, SSCR and AHDB will be on show, offering an opportunity to discuss recent scientific developments. Topical issues will include the Hutton Centre for Sustainable Cropping, the recently-launched Plant Health Centre, the International Barley Hub initiative, as well as EU projects DIVERSify and ReMIX. The Rowett Institute, Farming and Water Scotland, SoilEssentials and SASA will also be at the event.
