Commercial Subsidiaries
A platform for success
Macaulay Scientific Consulting Ltd (MSC) delivered
a fourth consecutive year of growth in revenue
by providing a unique range of expert analytical,
scientific and consultancy services to a global
customer base.
MSC differentiates itself by combining excellent
and unique analytical capabilities with extensive
knowledge and skill sets from the James Hutton
Institute’s science base for the benefit of
customers.
By working closely with customers, staff assisted in
solving problems that often required a non-routine
approach and a short turnaround time. As a result,
MSC was able to further increase turnover and
offer its expert analytical and scientific consultancy
services to a wider range of private and public
sector customers, particularly in the oil and gas
industry.
Through its work MSC enhances the interaction
of Institute scientists with the commercial
world, while the revenue and profit from
services contributes directly and indirectly to the
sustainability of the James Hutton Institute.
Major highlights 2013-14
Customers for MSC’s analytical and consultancy
services come from oil and gas, environmental,
renewable, food and drink, water and land use and
forensics sectors. Throughout the past year, MSC
has supported clients by helping to solve problems
that require new analytical method development.

A collaborative vision for the future
By working with customers in existing and new
markets, MSC expects to continue growth with
a topline revenue target of over £2.5 million for
the financial year 2014-15. MSC aims to further
integrate activities with MRS by establishing a
single subsidiary to commercialise the world class
science and facilities of the James Hutton Institute.
MSC fully intends to achieve this without disruption
to valuable customers.
long-standing and world-renowned expertise in
the field of Clay Mineralogy at the James Hutton
Institute and, again, delivered the course ‘Clay
Mineralogy and its Application to the Oil Industry’
to an international industrial audience.
A range of branded products and services,
including MicroResp™ and HuttonSoils, continue
to contribute to the commercial revenue and the
reputation of MSC and the James Hutton Institute.
Other major highlights include:
a fourth consecutive year of MSC turnover
and profit growth – fuelled in particular by the
performance of the analytical service sector
(showing over 21% year-on-year growth)
a number of new contracts and contract
extensions and renewals relating to consultancy
activity
addition of further high specification instrument
for X-Ray Powder Diffraction to support the
commercial activity and very significant growth
in this area
successful ISO17025 re-accreditation.
