Hutton Highlights, February 2018

James Hutton brought together his ideas on agriculture in terms of climate and vegetation, soil formation and management, farm labour and economy, husbandry and plant breeding in his work ‘Elements of Agriculture’. His thoughts about soil management and plant breeding are remarkably insightful, and closely aligned with present-day thinking. Hutton’s final work; it was never published but Emeritus Professor Alan Werritty has been preparing an edition for publication that we hope will soon provide a resource to inspire further research on how to solve some of the world’s biggest challenges. It will be fascinating to see how contemporary his observations and thoughts are in relation to the Sustainable Development Goals.
