He saw the natural world around him as a work in progress, shaped by the processes of erosion, denudation and the ‘continuity of Nature’s operations’. He developed a grand theory of the Earth in which he tried to make sense of a lifetime of observation and deduction about the way in which our planet functions. A leading figure in the eighteenth-century Scottish Enlightenment, he was also an innovative farmer, successful entrepreneur and a man with endless intellectual curiosity. The year 2026 will be the tercentenary of his birth and various special events are in prospect. The first of these is this rewritten and considerably expanded new edition of the best-selling Hutton biography first published in 1997 and revised in 2012, which now has over a hundred illustrations. New James Hutton biography hits the shelves
