Dec 23 Hutton Highlights

Look back on 2023 events 26 Hutton Highlights We’re almost at the end of 2023 and since the last Hutton Highlights in June, we’ve had a busy events period. Our summer season included Arable Scotland, run in partnership with SRUC and AHDB with a strong focus on how we integrate new tools and technologies into Scotland’s arable farming systems; Potatoes in Practice, which brought together demonstrations, cutting-edge research, trade exhibits and a wealth of knowledge at the UK’s largest field-based potato event hosted by ourselves along with SRUC and Agrii; and Fruit for the Future, held on one of the wettest days of the summer where we talked about our latest research in soft fruits to a very wet but still interested audience. As well as our own organised events, our stand at the Royal Highland Show was very popular and featured key projects including Glensaugh Climate-Positive Farming Initiative, the International Barley Hub (IBH) and the Advanced Plant Growth Centre (APGC). We also had a tasting station featuring the Glen Ample and Skye raspberries, that we have developed, and some of the products which our science has been instrumental in producing including Arbikie climate positive gin and Ribena mojitos, as Ribena uses blackcurrants which we produced for them. We used our stand to encourage support for a National Potato Innovation Centre (NPIC) and had written pledges made by various high profile visitors including DEFRA Minister Mark Spencer and members of the UK Government’s Scottish Affairs Committee.
