James Hutton Institute Annual Review 2012-13 - page 6

It has been another exciting year for the Institute –
a year of consolidation and realising our potential
as one of the largest research institutes of our kind
in Europe. We have been rising to the challenges
set out in our Corporate and Science Strategies.
Fundamental to our ambition is the continuing
need to globalise the impact of our world-class
science and develop as a science business to grow
our funding base. We are delivering the value of
our science by engaging with the communities
that need and use scientific evidence to inform
decisions and choices for their lives, livelihoods,
health and wellbeing. A gap often exists between
science and those who use it, and so, as set out in
our Corporate Strategy, we are using five keystones
to bridge this gap:
Welcome to our Second Annual Review
Throughout the review you will see how each
activity and achievement works to build a bridge
and have a more profound impact on the world
around us.
This year, the Board instigated a series of external
reviews of our science groups. The purpose is to
benchmark our science against others and assess
our capacity for delivering the Science Strategy.
In this review you will read the evidence for the
excellence of our science throughout 2012–13
and see many examples of how our knowledge
and innovation is applied in the real world by
working closely with people such as farmers, food
businesses and policy advisors.
Throughout 2012–13 we formalised our working
agreements with several key organisations. Our
intention is to create a network of organisations
who share ambitions to address global challenges
facing the use of land to support food provision,
energy, clean water, the broader environment and
rural development, in the face of a rapidly growing
world population and climate change.
