James Hutton Institute Annual Review 2012-13 - page 9

By 2050 it’s estimated that nine billion people will need
to be fed and have clean water, sanitation and energy.
To ensure sustainability, these needs must be met in a
way that doesn’t compromise vital ecosystems. This is
the challenge: to ensure that an overarching integrated
systems approach is taken to allocating resources.
Without this approach, ‘global security’ will remain
elusive and it’s likely that related stresses, tensions and
conflicts will increase worldwide.
