James Hutton Institute Annual Review 2012-13 - page 7

People are core to any organisation – not only
those it employs but also those it engages. Our
people live and work to create and support
excellent science and deliver it to those who use
our knowledge and innovation. We ended the year
in profound sadness at the death of Dr Stewart
Rhind and Dr Julian Dawson who were killed in
a road accident in March. Their loss was felt by
all. The reaction of our staff in supporting the
bereaved families and each other is testament to
the spirit of the Institute. As a memorial to two
valued colleagues we planted trees at Aberdeen to
symbolise the continuing growth that comes from
people who strive to support those around them
and the strong values that endure at the Institute.

We advised the Scottish Government
on potential implications of Common
Agricultural Policy reform with the
Deputy Director for Agriculture and Rural
Development saying: “the excellent work
the James Hutton Institute did for the Pack
Inquiry is really informative and we’ve
been deploying it quite strongly in our
contacts with Member States”.
