The techniques of data science combined with the underlying data we and others hold on soils are used increasingly in our research to understand the properties and functions of soils. Together these define our 'Digital Soils' group, comprised of six sub-disciplines that include Digital Soil Mapping, Soil Spectroscopy, Digital Soil Mineralogy, Digital Soil Morphometrics, Soil Databases and Soil Data Science/Statistics. The James Hutton Research Institute is the result of the merger in April 2011 of MLURI and SCRI. This merger formed a new powerhouse for research into food, land use, and climate change.
