We understand that to make a difference, creativity and innovation must be relevant to the needs and aspirations of society and people and respect all scientific disciplines and approaches.

Our scientific ethos is one of the “advancement of knowledge” and we aspire to achieve this through excellence with objectivity, independence and transparency, and minimisation of any conflict of interest.

Above all, the Institute leads by example through its activities, outputs and engagement with others.

The James Hutton Research Institute is the result of the merger in April 2011 of MLURI and SCRI. This merger formed a new powerhouse for research into food, land use, and climate change.
