As Chief Executive of the Institute Colin is responsible for leading the organisation and developed the vision and mission around the UN Sustainable Development Goals. As a scientist he has led major research programmes on Protecting the Nations Soils and the Ecosystem Approach to address land use decision making; served on the RSE Commission of Inquiry “Facing up to Climate Change” and was a contributing author to the UK National Ecosystem Assessment. He has >30 years of research experience in soil science and is co-inventor of MicroResp, a novel profiling method for characterizing soils that is used in over 500 labs around the world. He was a Visiting Professor and now Guest Professor in the Soil and Environment Department, Swedish Agricultural Sciences University (SLU), Uppsala, Sweden and has worked in Europe, Australia, South America and China looking at temperate and semi-tropical ecosystems. He is an Associate of the Royal Agricultural Societies, Fellow of Royal Society of Biology and the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

Professor Deborah Roberts is Deputy Chief Executive and Executive Director of Science. She holds an Honorary Chair in the Business School, University of Aberdeen.
Her research experience spans agricultural economics and regional science and she has undertaken work for a wide range of funding bodies including the European Commission, DEFRA, ESRC, the Scottish Government, Forestry Commission, Scottish Natural Heritage and the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.
Alasdair Cox
Director of Operations

As Director of Operations Alasdair is responsible for the delivery of the Institute’s Communications, Estate, Human Resources and IT functions, as well as the development of the Project Management Office and providing operational support to James Hutton Limited.
He has over 20 years experience gained in the agricultural and food sectors where he managed multi-functional teams in a very competitive retail environment and latterly in a publicly funded research, education and consultancy organisation.
