Spring 2025 gets off to a good start!

The James Hutton Institute can report that the weather at its Invergowrie site was rather pleasant in March.

It was the 3rd sunniest March since their records began in 1954, the 5th warmest and the 7th driest.

The sun shone for a total of 164 hours, compared with the long-term 30-year average of 121.3 hours.  That’s only a little short of the 169.7 hours recorded in 2009 and 170.9 in 2022.

The mean air temperature was 1.3ºC above the average for this time of year at 7.1ºC.  The hottest day came on the very last day of the month when the mercury hit a high of 18ºC, while the lowest temperature, recorded less than two weeks before that, was -3.0ºC.

The hottest March recorded at the Hutton was in 2012 when the average air temperature was 9ºC.  The previous record of 8.1 ºC was way back in 1961.

There was less than half the expected rainfall in March.  Data show that there was 19.2mm of rain, which is a mere 41.6% of the long-term average of 46.2mm.  The driest March recorded was in 2012 when only 5.1mm fell in Invergowrie.
