VLT Development Theatre

A development and demonstration virtual reality theatre has been constructed to compliment the mobile Virtual Landscape Theatre. The dimensions and capabilities of the development theatre are the same as the VLT enabling the preparation and testing of models in a controlled environment.

VLT being used to present an offshore windfarm proposalThe development theatre has been used for presenting work on land use scenarios to a range of audiences including the Romanian Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Scottish Government Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and Environment (Mr Richard Lochhead), and senior officers in the Scottish Government, including the Permanent Secretary, Sir Peter Housden, and Director-General Enterprise, Environment and Digital, Mr Graeme Dickson. Visitors from Scottish Government agencies include Ian Ross, Chairman of Scottish Natural Heritage and Terry A'Hearn CEO of Scottish Environment Protection Agency.

It has been used for workshops on cumulative visual impacts of windfarms and landscape planning with Scottish Natural Heritage,Highland Council, and Aberdeenshire Council and to present contemporary research and knowledge exchange, such as work on raising public awareness about Chalara Ash Dieback under the Chalara Action Plan for the Tree Health Advisory Group.

Visiting research groups include representatives from the Colleage of Agriculuture and Veterinary Medicine, University of Qassim, Saudi Arabia.

It has been used in projects by students at the University of Aberdeen, such as research into public preferences relating to offshore windfarms and landscape change, and in presentations to the public, student groups and other visiting organisations. Examples of visiting groups are on the VLT events page. It has also been used as a venue for demonstrations and discussion about environmental issues, such as nearshore and offshore windfarms (for example, EU Ourcoast Project), and the use of an ecosystem approach for greenspace planning.

The Virtual Reality Development Theatre is available for hire by government and its agencies, research organisations and for commercial purposes.
