Climate change and carbon emissions

Top Soil Organic Matter

Emissions of greenhouse gases contributes to global environmental change; it has been estimated that around 31% of the total Scottish emissions is due to Land Use Change and Forestry given the preponderance of organic soils in Scotland. Scottish soils contain around 4.5 m tonnes of carbon.

This compares to 0.1 m tonnes in British vegetation and 7.9 m tonnes in the European tree stock.
