Global Research Alliance Modelling Platform unveiled on World Environment Day

A free, open source modelling platform that seeks to become a vibrant network of agricultural greenhouse gas researchers, model developers and students has been launched on World Environment 2015.

The Global Research Alliance Modelling Platform (GRAMP) aims to enable researchers to look more strategically at what the various versions of different models can deliver in accounting for the effect of agricultural management practices on greenhouse gas emissions, in identifying promising mitigation options and in assessing the effect of future climate on emissions.

Dr Jagadeesh Yeluripati, from the Information and Computational Sciences group of the James Hutton Institute, co-ordinates this research project. The initiative was funded by DEFRA (UK) under the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA).

The GRA was launched in 2009 to bring countries together to find ways to grow more food without increasing greenhouse gas emissions. The Alliance is founded on the voluntary, collaborative efforts of countries worldwide. As a facilitator for the GRAMP platform, Dr Yeluripati said: “We believe that exchange of experiences will help us to identify and solve key issues in greenhouse gas emission quantification and modelling. We hope that GRAMP will eventually lead to a common, harmonised set of modelling approaches and understanding.

“I encourage researchers to join the platform, participate in discussions and share their experiences.”

As part of the GRAMP platform, monthly webinars will be telecast, given by eminent scientists in this field. The first webinar will be broadcast on Tuesday 16 June 2015 by Professor Changsheng Li, entitled “Modelling soil GHG emissions based on biogeochemical concepts”.

To join the platform and attend the webinar, it is necessary to register on the GRAMP website. Registration is free and is open to everyone.

The Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA) brings countries together to find ways to grow more food without growing greenhouse gas emissions. It was launched in December 2009. The Alliance is founded on the voluntary, collaborative efforts of countries worldwide. Its membership and governance arrangements are underpinned by a Charter , signed by all participating countries. This Charter establishes the Alliance Council, which is the representative body of all member countries. The current Chair of the Council is the Netherlands. The GRA has over 45 member countries, partner with farmer organisations like the World Farmers’ Organisation and international organisations that share common goals with such as the Food and Agriculture Organisation and the World Bank. In addition to members and partners, the GRA collaborates with other non-government and government organisations and scientists from around the world.

The James Hutton Research Institute is the result of the merger in April 2011 of MLURI and SCRI. This merger formed a new powerhouse for research into food, land use, and climate change.
