The Director of Research Impact of the James Hutton Institute, Professor Bob Ferrier, is pleased to announce that James Hutton Limited, the new wholly owned subsidiary of the Institute, has begun trading.

The new company brings together the Institute’s two commercial subsidiaries Mylnefield Research Services Ltd (MRS) and Macaulay Scientific Consulting Ltd (MSC), with expertise in a comprehensive range of analytical, research and consultancy services such as X-ray diffraction, lipid analysis, molecular diagnostics, inorganic analysis and soil analysis.

The company will offer consulting in assessment and remediation of contaminated land, flora and fauna surveying, monitoring and assessment, evaluation of land management practice, animal behaviour and welfare, land evaluation, and coastal water quality assessments, amongst other areas. James Hutton Limited will provide services to more than 28 countries around the world, from small and medium enterprises to large multinationals.

Commenting on the announcement, Professor Ferrier said the merger enabled the two former consultancy businesses to combine their research expertise into a single offering. Customers everywhere would now benefit from a broad range of scientific and analytical skills, economies of scale, world class research laboratories and facilities and renowned science excellence.

The Interim Managing Director of James Hutton Limited, Dr Jonathan Snape, noted that the merger also allowed the new commercial subsidiary to leverage the world class science research expertise offered by its shareholder, the James Hutton Institute.

"Our best-in-class science research and analytical expertise for industrial and agricultural clients is supported by the Institute, one of the UK's leading environmental and food security research organisations. We look forward to broadening our customer base locally and internationally and showcasing our bespoke science solutions to meet client needs", he said.

James Hutton Limited will continue to be based at the Invergowrie site outside Dundee that houses its offices and laboratory facilities, and its office in Aberdeen.
