“I believe the visit today has been beneficial to both parties. We focused on solutions for promoting rural development whilst protecting Mozambique’s natural resources.

The Mozambique Minister of State Administration, Her Excellency Carmelita Rita Namashulua, learned about the research conducted at the James Hutton Institute during a visit to our Aberdeen site yesterday.

The Minister and her delegation, including several City Mayors and Governors were at the site in Craigiebuckler as part of a visit to the city. The visit was hosted by Professor David Miller, Knowledge Exchange Co-ordinator and the delegation also met Chief Executive Professor Iain Gordon and members science staff who were on hand to offer an insight into the varied work carried out by the Institute.

During the visit the Minister was shown the Institute’s Soil Analytical facilities by Jason Owen, as well as the Scottish National Soil archive by Malcolm Coull. David Miller and Paula Horne presented a demonstration of the Institute’s Virtual Landscape Theatre. The Institute was encouraged by the response of the Minister as to the prospects for collaborations and partnerships for future projects.

Following the visit, Professor Miller said: “I believe the visit today has been beneficial to both parties. We focused on solutions for promoting rural development whilst protecting Mozambique’s natural resources”.

Also during her trip to the city, the Minister and her representatives met with Aberdeen City and Shire Councils to discuss issues such as planning, infrastructure, transport, and oil and gas development as well as visiting city attractions including Marischal College and the University of Aberdeen.

The James Hutton Research Institute is the result of the merger in April 2011 of MLURI and SCRI. This merger formed a new powerhouse for research into food, land use, and climate change.
