“Top-quality food and drink is central to the Perthshire economy as it is to Scotland’s economy. The Institute’s research contributes to that excellence from farm to fork, and to ensuring its production is not costing the Earth. We are glad that so many local producers share that ethos.

At a ceremony held at the Crieff Hydro on 20 November, the James Hutton Institute presented the Perthshire Chamber Business Star Award for Excellence in Food and Drink to Robert Corrigan of Mr C’s Hand-Crafted Pies, a small firm based at Jamesfield near Abernethy and renowned for its speciality pies.

The Institute sponsored the award for the third year running, with this year’s judging panel including two-Michelin Star chef Andrew Fairlie,  Hutton food researcher Dr Gordon McDougall and Perthshire Chamber’s Maureen Young.

Mr C’s Pies scooped the award in the face of stiff competition from the other shortlisted companies in their category, Allan’s Chilli Products, Highland Distillers (Glenturrett) and 2014 winners The Inveralmond Brewery.

On presenting the award to Mr Corrigan, Gillian Stirton, James Hutton Institute External Communications Manager said: “Top-quality food and drink is central to the Perthshire economy as it is to Scotland’s economy. The Institute’s research contributes to that excellence from farm to fork, and to ensuring its production is not costing the Earth. We are glad that so many local producers share that ethos.”

The Perthshire Chamber of Commerce Business Star Awards celebrate all aspects of the local business world, including tourism and leisure, food and drink, retail, innovation, customer service, commitment to the community and exporting. The awards also recognise the value of emerging talent and individuals who have proved outstanding in their particular sector as apprentices and employees.
