Seafood champions wanted in Aberdeenshire

There is a wealth of excellent shellfish and fish establishments and businesses in the area.

Do you have a favourite restaurant which serves seafood in Aberdeenshire? How about your local chippie? Maybe a trusty fishmonger who regularly supplies you with fresh local fish? Then the East Grampian Coastal Partnership is looking for you.

Through an online survey, EGCP is currently researching the potential for a seafood festival and trail project for the Aberdeenshire area, in order to bring these ‘Seafood Champions’ together and promote their potential.

Ela Nowakowska, promoter of the Seafood Champions initiative, said: “There is a wealth of excellent shellfish and fish establishments and businesses in the area, many of which are not as popular or well-known as they deserve to be. We trust the project will help us develop a seafood culture in Aberdeenshire, whereby consumers appreciate the abundance and high quality of local produce and choose to support local coastal communities by visiting the places which will feature on the Seafood Trail.”

The initiative has been favourably received by officials from Aberdeenshire Council. “This project will identify how the profile of these coastal assets can be enhanced by exploring the potential for a seafood trail to help attract more visitors, from both near and far, to the area. We warmly welcome this initiative,” said Derek McDonald, Industry Support Executive (Rural and Maritime) for the council.

The project is being partially funded by the Aberdeenshire European Fisheries Fund (AEFF) and will be delivered in partnership with Aberdeenshire Fisheries Local Action Group (FLAG). The Seafood Champions survey is available at bit.ly/seafoodtrail_consumersurvey.
