Pat is a research scientist with over 35 years experience, mainly in Soil Organic Chemistry, Microbiological and Biogeochemistry of Catchment Systems. She has experience of a broad range of Analytical and Microbiological techniques with extensive instrumentation, fieldwork and site management skills.

Current interests include the study to investigate Persistant Organic Pollutants (POPs) such as Polybrominated diphenyls (PBDE)/Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), Phthalates (PAEs),  Per & Polyfluoralkyl substances (PFAS), Pharmaceuticals/ Pesticides such as neonicotinoids and Estrogens ( EDCs) in several difficult matrics  for various RESAS projects. These areas produces data from the analysis of Water, Soils & Foodstuffs either by GC-MS or now predominately LC-MS/MS.

Past research

Has previously been involved in the study of the effect of Long Term Sewage Sludge application to Agricultural Soils on Soil Microbial Activity and the implications for Agricultural Productivity and Long Term Fertility.

The following Publications have not yet been migrated to the James Hutton Institute's Pure service and relate to the research outputs from the two legacy organisations: The Macaulay Land Use Research Institute and The Scottish Crop Research Institute.
