Robin is a plant ecologist at the Institute focusing on the management and functioning of biodiversity in a range of Scottish ecosystems. He currently leads one of the five Scottish Government funded research themes in the Strategic Research Programme, Theme D “Natural Resources” as well as a project in the Biodiversity Topic “Identifying the causes of biodiversity change with specific references to the Intergovernmental Science-policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services drivers”.

Robin is a plant ecologist at the Institute focussing on the management and functioning of biodiversity in a range of Scottish ecosystems. He is interested in how management decisions propagate through ecosystems, particularly related to the impacts of grazing on different species. Each decision will have winners and losers. He is also interested in how biodiversity is changing at a national level and is developing methods to identify the main divers of change.

He was appointed a Visiting Professor in the School of Biological Science at the University of Liverpool in 2001, appointed a Chartered Ecologist in 2014 and became a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management in 2022. He is a Coordinating Editor of the Nordic Journal of Botany, an Associate Editor of Applied Vegetation Science and a Subject Editor for Oikos. He is an author of over 200 refereed publications as well as numerous reports to government departments and statutory agencies.

Robin is the institute’s representative on the North-East Scotland Biodiversity Partnershipand chairs its Management Group.

His current research covers the following areas:

He also maintains an interest in previous areas of research including:

  • The role large mammals play as seed dispersal agents,
  • Bracken ecology and control,
  • The role of seedbanks in vegetation dynamics, and
  • The impact of management on vegetation dynamics.
