Last month was the third warmest April since records began in 1954

April 2025 has gone down as the third warmest April on our Invergowrie site since our records began in 1954.  While a high of 10.5 ºC has been recorded twice, in April 2007 and 2011, this year saw the mercury hit an average of 9.5 ºC, still well above the long-term average of 8.0ºC.

The highest air temperature was 22.4 ºC, registered on 30th April, while the lowest temperature was on 19th April and was only 9.6 ºC.

Last month was also dry and sunny, ranking as the 11th driest April and the 6th sunniest on the Hutton’s records.

Total rainfall was 12.9mm, much lower than the average of 44.8mm.  The highest daily rainfall came on a particularly wet day on 14th April, when 4.4mm fell.

A total of 208 hours of sunshine were recorded at the Invergowrie site, which is 129.5% of the long-term average of 160.6 hours.  Impressive, but still quite a distance from the record-breaking 252.3 hours recorded in 2015.

The long-term average is calculated over 30 years, from 1991 – 2020, though it should be noted that this 30-year average is missing maximum air temperature readings between September and December 2017 when the Met Office removed all mercury thermometers.
