Mylnefield Lipid Analysis provides world-leading, independent analysis of all types of lipid materials, in UK MHRA and US FDA approved laboratories, and is a top performer annually in global proficiency programs for lipid analysis (GOED/AOCS, DGF).

Work is conducted to GMP/GCP regulatory standards, using validated procedures based on globally recognised American Oil Chemist’s Society (AOCS) and pharmacopoeial methods, and is ISO 9001 certified. Independent, unbiased quality control (either by acting as an external subcontractor or by supplying validation of internal systems) is provided to clients.

A full overview of the specialist services offered can be found on our website lipid.co.uk. Sample types typically range from fish and seed oils to food and drink, including infant formula, and high omega-3 containing products such as algal oils and omega-3 concentrates being used as pharmaceuticals. Clinical trial samples such as red blood cells, plasma and tissue samples, and skin lipids and cosmetics can also be analysed.

Claire Traynor, Head of Lipid Analysis

Samples are commonly analysed for composition, quality, adulteration and stability.  Routine tests performed include oil content, fatty acid profile (including omega-3, -6 and trans fatty acids), lipid class identification and quantification, oxidation testing, and determination of unsaponifiables such as sterols and vitamins.

In addition to analytical testing for quality control and product release purposes, shelf-life storage and testing can also be carried out, along with new method development and validation.

Our global client base includes oil producers, refiners and encapsulators, and food, drink, pharmaceutical and supplement manufacturers. Hospitals, universities, contract research organisations and other individual clients can also benefit from bespoke analysis to address individual client requirements.

World-Class Lipid Analysis
Mylnefield Lipid Analysis provides world-leading, independent analysis

What is lipid analysis and why is it important?

This kind of analysis identifies and quantifies fats, oils and other lipid compounds in biological samples. James Hutton Institute Scientific Services provides lipid analysis to support research into nutrition, plant biology, microbial systems and environmental science.

What types of samples can be analysed for lipids?

James Hutton Institute Scientific Services can analyse lipids in a wide range of samples including plant material, food products, microbial cultures and environmental samples. These analyses provide insight into lipid composition, metabolic processes and biological function.

How is lipid analysis used in scientific research?

It helps researchers understand how organisms produce and use fats and oils. At James Hutton Institute Scientific Services, lipid profiling supports studies in crop science, food quality, bioenergy research and microbial ecology.
