Farmers, agronomists, representatives of the food and drink industry and scientists will come together next week (Thursday 14th July, 4.00 to 6.30pm) at the James Hutton Institute’s Dundee site to take part in Fruit for the Future, the Institute’s annual celebration of soft fruit science.

One of the Institute’s most successful and long-running field events, Fruit for the Future this year returns to its roots with an evening fruit walk around Mylnefield Farm in Invergowrie, giving visitors the opportunity to not only hear about ongoing research but to see it in practice in the field.

This year, the programme features demonstrations on blueberry research (by Susan McCallum, James Hutton Institute); new selections from the Institute’s raspberry breeding programme (Nikki Jennings, James Hutton Limited); Integrated Pest Management and biocontrol of raspberry aphids (Nick Birch, James Hutton Institute); a newly developed hyperspectral imaging platform to detect below-ground plant stress (Dominic Williams, James Hutton Limited), finishing up with the traditional tasting and scoring of new raspberry selections.

Likewise, the event will feature – for the first time – a Spotted Wing Drosophila free detection clinic for growers, as part of a UK-wide monitoring project jointly funded by the Scottish Government's Rural and Environment Science and Analytical Services Division (RESAS) and AHDB Horticulture.

Attendance is free but please book via Eventbrite or alternatively email events@hutton.ac.uk. Join in the conversation before, during and after the event by using #FruitForTheFuture on Twitter.

The James Hutton Research Institute is the result of the merger in April 2011 of MLURI and SCRI. This merger formed a new powerhouse for research into food, land use, and climate change.
