Discussing sustainable farming at LEAF Tech Day 2014 (c) James Hutton Institute
"At this field based event, experts from the Institute and partners Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) and SoilEssentials will provide insight into their work and its impact for farmers.

As part of its commitment to environmentally sustainable farming, the James Hutton Institute, one of Scotland’s LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) Innovation Centres, invites farmers to attend the LEAF Technical Day 2016, on 9th June 2016, at the Institute’s Balruddery Farm near Dundee.

At this field based event, experts from the Institute and partners Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) and SoilEssentials will provide insight into their work and its impact for farmers. Discussions will be held around new work to assist sustainable farming practice.

This year marks LEAF’s 25 year anniversary and the Institute is pleased to help them celebrate by showcasing even more of the research which supports our shared commitment to sustainable and environmentally responsible farming practice.

The event programme includes talks on highly topical subjects such as cover crops, integrated pest management, trends and current yield gaps, precision farming, sustainable cropping systems, improvement of riparian buffer strips, loss of biodiversity on farmland, soil texture and structure, farm management for pest control, nitrogen fixation, improved phosphorus use efficiency and cereal-legume plant teams.

The James Hutton Institute is a lead centre in the science and practice of sustainable agriculture and environment. Its approach combines innovative field management with advanced crop varieties to maintain a healthy balance of outputs. It aims to achieve yield and quality of product with reduced inputs, water pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, and to enhance the stock of natural capital, regarding soil, biodiversity and an attractive farmed landscape, for future generations.
