This project was funded by NERC as part of the Valuing Nature Network. It brought together an interdisciplinary team (soil scientists, ecologists, economists and modellers) to develop an understanding of how ecosystem processes and services interact in an agricultural system to produce benefits for people. A systematic evaluation of Scotland’s Natural Capital Asset Index (NCAI)
In 2011, Scotland became the first country in the world to publish a detailed attempt to measure annual changes in its natural capital, based on an evaluation of ecosystem service potential. This report, commissioned by Scottish Natural Heritage, reviews the indicators used, their robustness, and draws on recent developments in natural asset accounting to explore options for refining the NCAI.
