Current research interests

My overall scientific interests are crop modelling, precision agriculture, agronomy, climate change, crop and soil sciences, remote sensing, and climate forecasts in agriculture.

I will work in applying crop simulation models to understand the spatial and temporal variability of barley (and other crops) over Scotland as affected by weather, climate and crop management. I will study the effects of climate extremes and climate change on crop production.

I would also like to make an impact on farmers around Scotland by applying some of the research in precision agriculture I did in the past to evaluate crop characteristics and management practices that enhance resource use efficiency and reduce risks associated with climate change.

In addition, I would like to develop work on modelling interactions between crop genetics, physiology, phenotypic traits and the environment.

I am currently working on assessing the impacts of climate change in Sub-Saharan Africa with a transdisciplinary framework on smallholders’ agricultural systems. I am collaborating with the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences to study the response of wheat growth and yield and growth to warming and delay sowing; and with Nanjing Agricultural University for wheat nitrogen management.

Past research

I started my scientific career as agronomist in southeast Italy working on nitrogen fertilization on wheat in rainfed environments. I then moved into precision agriculture (PA), especially the use of remote sensing for wheat nitrogen (N) management. During my PhD at the University of Melbourne, Australia, I started realizing about the limits of PA for N management by using limited number of years, due the high inter-annual weather variability, to make informed decision on N fertilization.

I started learning and using crop simulation models to extrapolate the spatial variability into time. This brought me to the University of Florida where I collaborated to the Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project (AgMIP) as part of the wheat group where I am actively involved in crop modeling. I also work in the Southern Africa AgMIP team here we aim to assess the impact of climate change on crop production.

I have also worked on the Global Futures Crop Modeling group in collaboration with the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) for developing global simulation runs for wheat and potato using historical weather data and projected climate change. Other collaborative projects were the work with the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), the International Center of Potato (CIP), and the South East Climate Consortium (SECC).
