Climate change is theme of Aberdeen Fascination of Plants events

A series of Fascination of Plants Day events across Aberdeen will take place from the 14th to the 21st of May to highlight the impact of climate change on the natural world, featuring a range of activities from plant sales to sessions demonstrating how plants can help fight climate change.

The programme is part of the biannual Fascination of Plants Day, which encourages people to learn more about the importance of plants and plant science from providing the air we breathe to the sustainable production of nutritious food.

Organisations running events include the James Hutton Institute, University of Aberdeen, Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen City Council, Duthie Park Ranger Service, Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) and Scotland’s Garden Scheme.

Venues include Duthie Park, Aberdeen Science Centre and Cruickshank Botanic Garden.

Dr Andrea Britton, a plant ecologist within the James Hutton Institute’s Ecological Sciences department, said: “Plants are on the front line of the biodiversity and climate change crises.

“We are looking forward to bringing the fascinating world of plants and plant science to the public in Duthie Park and demonstrating some of the many benefits we derive from wild plants.”

Founded in 2012, Fascination of Plants Day has become a global movement, with organisations across 56 countries taking part. The programme for this year’s event runs from 14 to 21 May. A list of Fascination of Plants events in Aberdeen is available on the Robert Gordon University website.
